![]() USDP's 2009 Dyno Day By Jim Bigley USDP's third annual Dyno Day was held this past June 6th here in Missoula Montana, and the crowd just keeps getting bigger each year. From morning till late afternoon, 42 of the Big Three's diesel pickups rolled across the Mustang dyno rollers and kept everyone entertained. ![]() Despite the light rain and overcast skies, the third annual Dyno Day was USDP's biggest event so far, with more trucks, more people and more things to see and do. ![]() Arriving from Sacramento, California, Ray Howe was serious this year, winning the "Open Diesel" class with his 2006 Chevy. The Duramax produced a whopping 719-HP at the rear wheels using an aftermarket turbocharger and diesel fuel only (no nitrous). ![]() Free sandwiches, chips and soft drinks were cheerfully served by a contingent from a local Hooters restaurant. The girls did a fine job despite the cool and rainy weather. In addition to free food, USDP also gave away an Edge Juice certificate as a door prize, (4) $50 gift certificates, a few cases of Stanadyne Performance Formula fuel additive, and lots of hats, t-shirts and other goodies. ![]() USDP designed a unique rack and duct system that allowed the dual-stack exhaust to exit the building without smoking out the spectators. ![]() A number of early Power Strokes were in attendance. The 7.3L PSD in Cheyenne Welsh's custom 1996 Ford F250 produced 424 horsepower and 888 lb-ft of torque. ![]() Manufacturer displays and representatives were on hand to show what performance products are available for your truck. ![]() USDP carries a full range of fuel injection components, performance parts, and service for all three brands of diesel trucks. Whether you need injectors, injection pumps, ARP head studs, fuel treatment, or performance modules from Edge, Banks, BD, PPE, Superchips etc., you'll find them all here. I've attended quite a few dyno events going back more than 12 years. One minor complaint I've heard from participants through the years has been that typical diesel truck owners just can't compete with the manufacturer or sponsored trucks that attend. An aftermarket sponsored truck does have an advantage, in that horsepower takes money, and a manufacturer, dealer or vendor can tip the scales in their favor. To make it fair for everyone, dyno event organizers are now splitting the trucks into categories that allow everyone to have a shot at winning their class. Here are the 4 classes and winners at this year's USDP event:
Sportsman Class - 500-HP - Don Palmer 2004 Dodge 496-HP Super Street Class - 575-HP - KC French 2006 Dodge 572-HP Open Diesel Class - Open - Ray Howe 2006 Chevy 719-HP
A big thanks to the management and crew of U.S. Diesel Parts for another great dyno event. Montana is a great state to visit in June, so plan now to attend next year's Dyno Day, which is typically held the first Saturday in June.
