TDP's 11th Anniversary
By Jim Bigley
A revolution in diesel power is occurring. The new Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel fuel has created a multitude of new markets here in the U.S. for an increasing number of diesel powered vehicles. How does this affect The Diesel Page? The advancement in diesel technology and broadening market help all of us. More vehicle choices, more aftermarket products and better diesel fuel availability are just the beginning. Diesel power is becoming cool! Wasn't always that way. Eleven years ago, The Diesel Page began as a way to help 6.2/6.5 owners solve problems and improve their ownership satisfaction. This is still a big part of our mission here, but we have also grown to include the newest GM diesel engine - the Duramax 6600. I suspect many of the new 6.2/6.5 people might not know what The Diesel Page has accomplished during the past 11 years. The phenomenal diversity of proven 6.2/6.5 advancements, such as cooling upgrades, performance upgrades, engine maintenance, engine tuning tricks, turbocharger options, and so many other topics were first made known to the world though the effort of those who write for and contribute to The Diesel Page. No web site has done more for the GM diesel community than TDP. Many of you have requested that new content remain on the web site for a longer period of time, and to bring back some of the older material. We began that process last year. The Diesel Page currently offers more online content than any other diesel community web site. And, more new professionally written content is being added each and every month. Much of what we write and photograph remains accessible by the public, but a portion is set aside for subscribers. None of this would be possible without your continued support. In addition to the expanding content areas of the web site, the bulletin board forum received a brand new look, being upgraded with new bulletin board software in March 2006. Making the switch from the original UBB software to vBulletin was a significant step forward. Along with the board upgrade we also moved the BB operation to a brand new server and service provider. vBulletin allowed us to integrate a software addition called PhotoPost, which for the first time since March 2000, allows all registered board members to upload images onto the server, and then display those images in posted messages. The bulk of the upgrade process was made possible by board admin and longtime member Greg Shields (DmaxMaverick), who is "the man behind the curtain". We've learned from past experience that server performance and full system backups are important to the longterm health and reliability of the bulletin board. Our current backup program will prevent loss in board data in the event of a server failure or system corruption. In addition, we've expanded the number of forum moderators this past year in an effort to allow more members an opportunity to shape the direction and provide input for how the board is managed and improved. All of the moderators are great guys (and gal) who devote their time, effort and considerable expertise in helping everyone. TDP's bulletin board is operated by people who are passionate about all of GM's diesel light-truck engines produced since 1982. We don't sell anything for your truck. As the old saying goes, "We're just trying to help people".
Our focus is content - words and pictures. The books section will undergo a significant change in the near term. We're dropping the annual "Feature Articles" volumes from the book list, and instead will add more engine/vehicle specific books. This could be your last chance to get a copy of the 2001-2005 Feature Articles volumes... Many of you have wanted to see more of the older material back on the web site. We agree, and introduced a new Member's 6.2/6.5 Archive page in 2006, where selected articles, reviews and tech pages from years past would be placed back online in the Member subscriber area. Click the 6.2/6.5 Archive link to see what is currently available. A number of articles written since January 2001 could reappear online as part of a comprehensive plan to add value to both the web site and bulletin board. In addition, some of the older and more popular Duramax related articles have been brought back online. You can see a list of all currently available Duramax related member articles in the Member's Duramax Page. ![]() TDP's seventh annual Pull-Off was held this past July here in Montana. Web site stats show that Pull-Off coverage is rated among the top five articles produced each year by The Diesel Page. We're already in the planning stages for what could be the most important diesel truck test yet. The new LMM Duramax with 360 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque will be going up against the newest diesel equipped 6.4L Ford Powerstroke & 6.7L Dodge Cummins pickups. All three trucks are making more power while operating with the tighter 2007 emissions requirements. In addition, we're being told more progress has been made in 6.5L turbodiesel performance. We saw the best performance yet for the 6.5 in last year's test, and we're looking forward to seeing the 6.5 reach its ultimate potential. The results should be exciting - all around! The 2006 Pull-Off was also the first to be covered in a mainstream diesel magazine, namely Diesel World magazine. In addition to web site coverage, we'll see more print coverage for the upcoming 2007 Pull-Off. You're invited to attend this July 14th here in Western Montana!
Back in 1996, the web site was accessed about 35,000-40,000 times each month. Move ahead 11 years... The content web server here in Montana was accessed and served 1,462,385 files during the month of January 2007. This works out to about 40-Gigabytes of monthly bandwidth. In closing, I would like to thank you all for being a part of the GM Diesel community and for your support. We've been at this for more than eleven years now, and with your help, The Diesel Page will be around for a long time yet to come. Happy Motoring!
